Be The Light When The Lights Go Out

An interesting announcement crossed my news feed just a few minutes ago that got me to thinking.  The report is about an X-class flare that could hit Earth in the next few days and knock out all power.  So why is that so special?  Well, for one key point.  An X-class flare has the ability to knock out the power grid.  Has it happened before?  Sure, plenty of times.  In fact, under the right circumstances a much weaker M class flare could turn out the lights.  But that's not why I'm writing about.

Matthew 5:14-16 (KJV) - "Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.  Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven."

God commands believers to be a light unto the world.  What does light do?  Light drives darkness away.  Sure, the world has its artificial light from electricity, candles, and the like.  Then it also has the sun and moon which light up the day and night respectively.  But what happens when those go out?  The sun and moon can be darkened by any number of things, denying us their light.  Even electric and non-electric lighting (flames) can be snuffed out or prevented from shining.  With them gone there is only darkness.

The same is true with God.  He is the source of all light.  Without Him men are in darkness.  That is why we are commanded to be the light to the world.  But how do we do that?  Well, a good example of this is fiber optics.  It takes light from the source and transmits it to the destination where it becomes a light to the room, and not the light of the room.  The source is the light, and the fiber is the conduit.  In the same way we need to take the light of God, which is in us, and spread it to the entire world which is in spiritual darkness and needs the light of God in their lives.

So here's your homework for the day.  If God wants us to be a light to the world, in what ways can we do that?  How can we show the light of Christ, and especially His love to all as He commanded us to?  Share your thoughts and steps.  Sure, normally I tell you the answer, however, the best way to learn is to find those answers for yourself.  So grab a bible and a concordance, and start researching, and then share all that God reveals to you.

PS, there are over 177 Old Testament references to light in the bible (KJV) and 95 in the New Testament.  So there's plenty of clues for you to find.  So get to work. :)
